Shelton eliminates Sonego to reach the Australian Open semi-finals
The Australian Open quarter-finals continue in the men's draw. While the first semi-final match-up between Djokovic and Zverev has been decided, Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Sonego will now meet.
The American, seeded 21, is the favorite against the 29-year-old Italian, who is playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
Both players put on an entertaining and suspenseful show. While Shelton seemed to be heading for victory without having to draw on his physical resources, the 22-year-old was challenged by Sonego, who gave nothing away.
The latter tried his luck by coming to the net on numerous occasions, even landing a few spectacular shots.
Shelton, however, had more break opportunities than his opponent, who did not give up, but lost in four sets (6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 in 3h50).
Ben Shelton has qualified for his second Grand Slam semi-final after the 2023 US Open, and becomes the youngest American to reach the last four in Melbourne since Andy Roddick in 2003.
He will face either Jannik Sinner or Alex De Minaur in the final quarter-final of the day on Rod Laver Arena.
