Shelton was badly beaten, but came through to meet Sinner in the last 16!
Ben Shelton went through all kinds of emotions in the 3rd round. Engaged in a match that had barely begun yesterday, since play had been stopped after 5 games due to rain, he needed 5 sets to finally dispose of a Denis Shapovalov who was as wonderful as he was inconsistent (6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2).
Without really shining, the world number 14 was able to keep his back to the grindstone and be realistic enough to tame an opponent capable of anything. It's rare enough to say so, but for once, the American was the more consistent of the two players.
Shapovalov, on the other hand, may well have some regrets, as he seemed to dominate at times. Despite this, the result remains satisfying for the player, who continues his bid to return to the pinnacle of the tennis world.
For Shelton, however, it's now time to refocus, as a huge challenge awaits him in the next round: a round-of-16 clash with Jannik Sinner.
