Since yesterday, I wasn't feeling very well," Sinner explains the reasons for his withdrawal in the Cincinnati final
Jannik Sinner was unable to defend his title in Cincinnati, forced to retire after just five games in the first set.
The world No. 1, who was ill, explained his condition during the trophy ceremony:
"Normally, I start by talking about my opponent, but today I’ll begin with you (addressing the crowd). I’m really sorry to disappoint you. Since yesterday, I wasn’t feeling very well. I thought it would improve overnight, but it got worse. I tried to step onto the court and at least play a little, but I couldn’t go on.
I’m extremely sorry. I know some of you had to go to work this Monday or had other things to do, and I’m truly sorry. Of course, congratulations to Carlos. Another title. Not the way you wanted to win, but the season you’re having is incredible.
You and your team are doing an amazing job. Keep it up. I wish you all the best for the US Open and the rest of the season.
