Siniakova equals a Navratilova record: The Czech further cements her doubles legacy
Partnered with Taylor Townsend at the WTA Finals, Katerina Siniakova will finish the 2025 season as the world number one in doubles for the fifth time in her career.
Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend are among the favorites for the title at the WTA Finals. With two wins in as many matches since the start of the tournament, the pair has already secured their qualification for the semi-finals, even before their final group match this Thursday against the Russian duo Mirra Andreeva/Diana Shnaider. Thanks to this qualification, Siniakova received excellent news in recent hours.
Indeed, the Czech player is now guaranteed to finish the year at the top of the doubles rankings, finishing a season in that position for the fifth time in her career after 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2024.
Since the introduction of the doubles rankings in 1984, only Martina Navratilova had managed to finish 5 seasons as the WTA doubles world number one (1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 1989).
Before Siniakova, Cara Black (2005, 2007, 2008, 2009) and Liezel Huber (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011) had also managed to finish at the top of the doubles rankings on four occasions.
"It's very special, it's incredible for me and I'm so happy to have achieved (finishing as world number one in doubles). I have so many great memories this season and I'm very grateful to be able to lift this trophy again," reacted the 29-year-old Siniakova for the WTA website.
