WTA Finals: Top Seeds Errani and Paolini Eliminated in Group Stage
While they were among the favorites to win the WTA Finals, the Italian players Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini were unable to advance past the group stage.
A few weeks ago, Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini had contributed to Italy's second consecutive Billie Jean King Cup triumph. But the Italian duo could not confirm this form at the WTA Finals.
Seeded number 1 in the doubles tournament after notably winning Roland-Garros in June, the pair was eliminated in the group stage of the Finals. Despite their opening victory against Asia Muhammad and Demi Schuurs (6-3, 6-3), the two Italians then lost two consecutive matches.
On Monday, November 3, they fell to Su-wei Hsieh and Jelena Ostapenko (6-3, 6-4), before losing this Wednesday to Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens (6-3, 6-3).
The Russian and Belgian pair thus secured their place in the semifinals, as did Hsieh and Ostapenko (who won all three of their matches) in the Martina Navratilova Group. The semifinal matchups will be known after Thursday's matches.
