Sinner: It's a dream, but to see Djokovic withdraw from the tournament is disappointing for everyone

Jannik Sinner was on the Court Philippe Chatrier playing his quarter-final against Grigor Dimitrov (6-2,; 6-4, 7-6) when he learned of Novak Djokovic's withdrawal for the rest of the French Open (right knee injury). A situation which guarantees the Italian the world n°1 spot when the next official ranking is published on Monday (June 10, 2024).

Questioned on the subject by Fabrice Santoro at the end of the match, Sinner (who received a standing ovation from the audience) was delighted to realize his dream, and at the same time sorry to see Djokovic withdraw from the tournament due to injury.

Jannik Sinner: "First of all, it's the dream of every tennis player in the world to become world No. 1. On the other hand, seeing Novak (Djokovic) withdraw from the tournament is disappointing for everyone. So I wish him a speedy recovery.

I try not to think too much about it, because Roland Garros is a tournament where I've always had difficulties, especially over the last two years.

So I'm already happy to be in the semi-finals, I'm going to enjoy it and try to play my best tennis. It's my team that makes this whole process possible, without them it would be impossible.

Without you either (to the spectators). This is a very special moment for me. I'm very happy to share it with you and with all the people who are watching me at home, especially in Italy. And we'll see what I can do (in the semi-finals)."

Congratulations to Jannik.
An exceptional talent and real progress in the development of his game in 2024. He is likely to be the next long-term numero uno.
It is refreshing to have a decent, humble human being as numero uno replacing the old guard.
