Sinner needed this win," says Cahill, his coach
Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final this Sunday to claim his first Grand Slam title on the London grass.
This victory also marks his revenge against the Spaniard after losing the final at Roland Garros, while also ending a streak of five consecutive defeats against him.
For his coach, Darren Cahill, this win was necessary: "It was important to win today for many reasons.
Carlos had dominated him in their last five matches. They played incredible matches, and Jannik had chances to beat him in maybe four of the five matches they played.
He hadn’t managed to pull it off. So today was important, not just because it was a Grand Slam final, nor just because it was Wimbledon, nor just because Carlos had won their last five matches against him.
It was a big day for him. He needed this win. So he was aware of the importance of closing out the match as soon as he had the chance.
Because of that, I think we saw a bit more energy in the big moments and a bit more focus to hang in there and make sure that, even when the match was in his favor, he could still shut the door on Carlos.
He did an incredible job today.
