Sinner plays it straight: "I don't know if I'm going to watch the final".
This Sunday, the men's final of Roland-Garros 2024 will pit Carlos Alcaraz against Alexander Zverev. Although very attractive, this match-up is bound to leave many disappointed, as 128 players were initially hoping to play the leading roles on Sunday.
And among all those left out, there's one player on whom all eyes are focused: Jannik Sinner. Buoyed by his dazzling tennis since January, the Transalpine is unquestionably the best player on the planet this year. Hitherto not very comfortable on clay, he nevertheless had an excellent tournament in Paris, coming within a set of reaching the final (beaten by Alcaraz in the semi-final).
Questioned by the press, Sinner made no bones about it. I don't know if I'm going to watch the final (between Alcaraz and Zverev this Sunday) - it's hard to watch, especially when you've played and lost the semi-final. It hurts, because you say to yourself: 'I could be there! I'm going to rest a bit, because my body needs it.
I'd done virtually nothing for three weeks before arriving here, and I've managed to string together a series of matches. Recovery is going to be very important before switching to the grass-court season. Preparation for grass is different. Different muscles are called upon. I'll be playing in Halle, and Halle is very different from Wimbledon, but it's still grass.
I had a very good Wimbledon last year (semi-finalist, stopped by Djokovic). I'll see what I can do this year and then we'll see what happens."
