Stats - Tien sets an early record since the ATP rankings were established
Learner Tien continues his meteoric rise. The 19-year-old American player, finalist of the Next Gen ATP Finals at the end of 2024, delivered a strong performance at the Australian Open by reaching the round of 16.
Along the way, he notably eliminated Daniil Medvedev, the 5th seed, in five sets in the second round (6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 1-6, 7-6).
At the Acapulco tournament taking place this week, the world No. 83 once again played a very high-quality match to eliminate world No. 2 Alexander Zverev (6-3, 6-4) after successfully coming through the qualifiers in Mexico.
This performance makes him the youngest player since the ATP rankings were established in 1973 to win his first two encounters against top 5 members (at 19 years and 87 days), as reported by the X account (formerly Twitter) OptaAce.
He thus becomes the second American player to achieve this feat during this period after Jimmy Connors, former world No. 1.
