Stuttering Rublev falls at Roland-Garros!
Matteo Arnaldi's Roland-Garros is absolutely monumental. In the most accomplished match of his young career, he toppled one of the main outsiders at this Roland-Garros: Andrey Rublev, world No. 6 and Madrid title-holder.
Faced with a Rublev more than ever falling back into his old ways, the Transalpine produced the perfect match. At just 23 years of age, Arnaldi's level of tennis is absolutely insane. Choking his opponent right to the end, he managed to frustrate an increasingly nervous Rublev. Slamming winners on all sides (47 winners, 19 unforced errors, 13 aces, 6 successful breaks), it's only logical that he should join the second week in Paris.
Italy certainly has an impressive crop of players. With Jannik Sinner unstoppable, Lorenzo Musetti more than promising and now Matteo Arnaldi in full bloom, the Italians have a lot to look forward to, and the French know all about it (Monfils beaten by Musetti, Gasquet eliminated by Sinner, Fils and Muller stopped by Arnaldi)!
For a place in the quarter-finals, the world number 35 could meet Stefanos Tsitsipas, unless Zhizhen Zhang comes along to surprise him.
