Surprises keep coming at Wimbledon: Rune and Cerundolo out in the first round
On this opening day of Wimbledon, several unexpected results have already been recorded in the men’s draw. Daniil Medvedev was defeated by Benjamin Bonzi in four sets (7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2), while Stefanos Tsitsipas threw in the towel against another French player, Valentin Royer. Another player eliminated right from the start on Monday was Holger Rune.
The Dane, seeded No. 8 in London, fell to Nicolas Jarry. Rune will likely leave this match frustrated, having led 2-0 in sets.
But the Chilean, aided by a rediscovered serve in the last three sets (31 aces in total), managed to turn the match around and win in five sets (4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in 3h34). Jarry, ranked 143rd in the ATP and coming through qualifying, will face Learner Tien for a spot in the round of 16.
Rune isn’t the only seeded player to fall in the first round, as Francisco Cerundolo also suffered the same fate. Already eliminated early at Roland-Garros, the Argentine, ranked 19th in the world, confirmed his current struggles, having now lost five of his last six matches on the main tour after his defeat to Nuno Borges (4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 in 2h27).
Two years ago, Cerundolo had dominated the Portuguese player in this same tournament during their only previous meeting. Borges will face either Billy Harris or Dusan Lajovic in the second round.
