Swiatek explains reasons for heavy loss to Gauff: "Nothing worked today"
Iga Swiatek bid farewell to her chances of a second consecutive title in Madrid after being defeated by Coco Gauff in the semifinals on Thursday (6-1, 6-1).
The one-sided result was surprising, as the Polish player was completely outplayed by an opponent against whom she had never lost a set on clay before. Her reaction to the media was highly anticipated:
"I couldn’t change anything during the match. It was the same from start to finish. I couldn’t raise my level of play. Coco played really well, but I couldn’t move properly, I couldn’t return her shots with enough weight on the ball… Everything was very bad on my side.
I couldn’t even come up with a Plan B in my game. Nothing worked today. I felt like I wasn’t positioning my feet well before hitting my shots.
I wish I could have improved my movement and turned things around like in previous matches, but it wasn’t possible today.
I’ll take a few days of rest before Rome. I haven’t had any since Stuttgart. My coach will decide what I should do in the coming days."
