Swiatek tested positive in August!
The International Tennis Integrity Agency revealed on Thursday that Iga Swiatek had tested positive for trimetazidine in August.
The test was carried out after the Cincinnati tournament, where she reached the final. The contamination is thought to have been caused by melatonin, a drug available over the counter in Poland, which she had been using to deal with sleeping problems and jetlag.
She claimed that she had no intention of doping and was unaware of the existence of this substance.
Following hearings and two expert analyses by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), her explanation was vindicated and deemed unintentional.
However, Swiatek was indeed provisionally suspended from the circuit, a suspension she served between September 22 and October 4, and which caused her to miss three tournaments. She now has eight days left to serve.
The information was revealed on Thursday after the Pole accepted the sanction from the International Tennis Integrity Agency.
The world no. 2 has also had to forfeit the prize money she won at the Cincinnati tournament.
