Tauson and Osaka Secure Their Spots in the Semifinals of the WTA 1000 Montreal
The last two quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal took place overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. After Victoria Mboko and Elena Rybakina, two more players confirmed their place in the final four.
First, Clara Tauson will indeed be in the semifinals. The Danish player, ranked 19th in the world, backed up her previous win against Iga Swiatek. Facing Madison Keys, Tauson, who still hasn’t dropped a single set since the start of the tournament, won without conceding her serve (6-1, 6-4 in 1h12).
Already a finalist at the WTA 1000 Dubai earlier this season, the 22-year-old will now compete for a chance to reach her second final in this tournament category against Naomi Osaka.
The Japanese player, for her part, was efficient in dispatching Elina Svitolina (6-2, 6-2 in 1h08). In control throughout, the four-time Grand Slam champion left no chance for the Ukrainian, whom she defeated for the fifth time in eight meetings, and advances to her first WTA 1000 semifinal in over three years, since reaching the final in Miami.
For a spot in the final, she will have to overcome Tauson, in a rematch of the WTA 250 Auckland final earlier this season. Injured in the abdomen at the time, Osaka had to retire, but now has the opportunity to seek revenge and compete in her biggest final in three years.
As a reminder, the Japanese player, who returned from maternity leave last year, hasn’t won a title since the 2021 Australian Open and is now just two wins away from an eighth career title on the main tour.
