The city of Turin awards Sinner the title of honorary citizen
Since 2021, the ATP Finals in tennis have been held in Turin, Piedmont. This is a fantastic way to promote the sport in Italy, especially since the performances of the transalpine athletes have been outstanding, with Jannik Sinner leading the way.
Ranked number one in the ATP rankings continuously from June 2024 to September 2025, the now world number two has already won four Grand Slam titles. A finalist in all Grand Slams this season, the 24-year-old player, however, stumbled against his great rival Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros and the US Open.
Winner of the Masters last year against Taylor Fritz, Sinner, who already boasts an impressive record, triumphed on home soil. In fact, in recent hours, the Piedmontese city has rewarded the Italian player for his performances that have highlighted the Turin landscape.
"The city has been able to organize major sporting events. There are many examples of municipalities that have not been able to do so, but in Turin, we have succeeded.
Today, we are able to host the ATP Finals for an additional five years. This is not an economic issue, but rather an organizational one, related to our ability to do so.
Sinner has made Turin famous worldwide through the combination of a major tennis event and a great Italian tennis player. Jannik (Sinner) is a role model for many young people who are getting into sports through his behavior, in victory and defeat, demonstrating that sacrifice and training lead to good results.
Even when losing matches, as unfortunately happened in recent days (in the US Open final) and as happens a thousand times in an athlete's sports career, one can react with elegance, which is not given to everyone, but he is capable of it.
He has a Turinese spirit, made of sacrifice and hard work, of accepting sports competition, for better or for worse. Jannik, Turin is proud of you and looks forward to celebrating you as an honorary citizen," stated Stefano Lo Russo, mayor of Turin, to Tennis World Italia.
