The FFT has removed Tsonga from the Davis Cup captain position: They think I have conflicts of interest

Contacted some time ago by the FFT to discuss the succession of the Davis Cup captain, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga quickly became disillusioned. The former French player saw his candidacy rejected for reasons he considers unfounded.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga opened up about many topics in an interview with Univers Tennis. The former world No. 5, finalist at the 2008 Australian Open, discussed his career, his retirement, the Big 3, the Musketeers group, and also the new generation.

When asked about his desire to one day become captain of the French Davis Cup team, the native of Le Mans stated that the FFT (French Tennis Federation) blocked his path:

"I had responded to the Federation's call, which had asked former players if they might be interested in being Davis Cup captain.

But they called me to tell me that I had conflicts of interest with my academies. That's what they say. I consider that I don't have any. But they feel that there are. So I don't see why that would suddenly change."

As for the possibility of him becoming a full-time coach on the tour, Tsonga said he is open to that possibility:

"I'm not closing the door at all. It's something that I think I would really enjoy. I can see myself doing it. You just need the right project that allows you to say: 'Okay, I'm leaving home for 35 weeks a year.' It has to be worth it. You have to like that person enough to be away for 35 weeks."
