The Fils/Shelton pair advances to the doubles quarterfinals in Toronto
Returning to the tour at the Toronto Masters 1000 after a two-month absence, Arthur Fils was eliminated in the third round by Jiří Lehečka. However, the 21-year-old Frenchman’s stay in Canada is not over yet.
Indeed, Fils is currently competing in the doubles tournament alongside Ben Shelton, who is still in contention in singles and will play his round of 16 match against Flavio Cobolli late Sunday night into Monday.
Facing Hugo Nys and Édouard Roger-Vasselin, the tournament’s No. 8 seeds, the French-American duo got the job done, winning in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
After their dramatic opening win against the American pair Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow (4-6, 6-3, 10-8), Fils and Shelton will take on the German duo Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz, the No. 4 seeds in Canada, for a place in the semifinals.
