"The grass is a surface that reshuffles the deck," Fritz believes in his chances at Wimbledon
Taylor Fritz has qualified for the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in his career. The American, ranked 5th in the world, defeated Karen Khachanov (6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6) for the first time in their three meetings.
Fritz, who reached the US Open final last year, will now have to overcome Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, who is on a 23-match winning streak since his defeat in the Barcelona final. During the press conference after securing his spot against the Russian, Fritz reflected on the keys to his current success.
"I’m always very demanding of myself, and I believe that’s something crucial to becoming a better tennis player every day because it gives me huge motivation.
I’ve learned not to get frustrated when things don’t go my way—I just try to persevere. During training, it’s about being as much of a perfectionist as possible.
The grass is a surface that reshuffles the deck. I think I’m closer to the level of the best players on grass, whether it’s Alcaraz, Sinner, or Djokovic, than I am at Roland-Garros, for example.
I know that if I play like I did in the first two sets (against Khachanov), no one can do much against me. Having played multiple Grand Slam quarterfinals gives me a lot of confidence in handling high-pressure situations.
I’ve learned not to put too much importance on the result, and that helps me play at my best. But most importantly, I feel like I’m a better tennis player now than I was two years ago," Fritz stated. He will do everything to secure his first career victory against Alcaraz in their third meeting, for Punto De Break.
