The struggles continue for Monfils: the Frenchman withdraws from the Shanghai Masters 1000
Injured in the ankle during his last tournament, Gaël Monfils will not be able to take his place in Shanghai. At 39 years old, Gaël Monfils still enjoys playing on the courts, and his strong start to the season, marked by a title at the Auckland tournament, proves it.
However, for several months, the Frenchman has been going through a tough time, both in terms of results and physically. Injured in the ankle and forced to retire last week at the Chengdu tournament against Alexander Shevchenko, the world number 54 will not return to competition in the coming days.
After announcing his withdrawal from the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing, Monfils has also decided not to participate in the Shanghai Masters 1000, which begins on October 1. Last year in China, he reached the round of 16 before losing to Carlos Alcaraz.
After Jack Draper, Tommy Paul, Arthur Fils, and Grigor Dimitrov, Monfils is the fifth major withdrawal, and Christopher O’Connell will take his place in the main draw without having to go through the qualifying rounds.
