"This makes me uncomfortable because I’m not very good at this kind of thing," Nadal talks about his tribute at Roland-Garros
Roland-Garros starts this Sunday, May 25, at Porte d’Auteuil. While the first matches of the tournament are awaited, the organization has also planned a ceremony to pay tribute to the clay court legend, Rafael Nadal. Questioned by the newspaper L’Équipe, the Spaniard discussed this event with the modesty he is known for:
"This makes me uncomfortable because I’m not very good at this kind of thing. I don’t really like tributes. I’m not a person who needs this kind of things. Really not. I am not someone with a big ego. I get along well with a bit of anonymity, tranquility. But I understand this moment at Roland-Garros because it’s a story we have lived together.
But, as I said, I don’t feel very comfortable in the spotlight. When I was playing tennis, yes, but other than that, these tributes give me a bit of a headache. I am obviously very grateful and happy to live this moment, to be able to say goodbye to all the people who supported me, to be able to thank them for everything they have given me throughout my career, especially in the last few years.
I have felt appreciated and loved in Paris, in France in general, and it’s something unforgettable. So it’s a beautiful moment to say goodbye, and I kind of wanted not to do another tribute elsewhere to give priority to Roland-Garros."
The ceremony is scheduled on the Philippe-Chatrier court right after the day session.
