Toward a WTA Edition of the Monte-Carlo Tournament? The Director Discusses Future Developments
The 2025 edition of the Monte-Carlo tournament concluded this Sunday with Carlos Alcaraz's victory over Lorenzo Musetti in the final.
Despite the absence of top players early in the tournament, such as Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev, tournament director David Massey expressed satisfaction with how the event unfolded.
"We are on the verge of breaking our record again. We were very close to reaching full capacity for this tournament.
Last year, we welcomed over 148,000 spectators, and this year, we will surpass the historic milestone of 150,000 attendees over the nine days of the tournament.
One of the biggest developments for our event this year—more or less two key changes—was expanding our site by over 35% with the introduction of the players' village.
We have plans to further develop the site, but their implementation will likely take another two or three years.
Next year, even though we hoped to launch these projects, they probably won’t be visible yet.
It will take more time, but we intend to take the necessary steps to evaluate possible improvements.
If we manage to replicate this event next year, it would already be a great achievement for the tournament and the team.
We are open to the idea of integrating the WTA into our intra-tournament competitions. This would require adding more days to the event and shifting the dates by at least a week to accommodate it.
Nothing is planned at the moment, but such a possibility shouldn’t be ruled out in the future. I believe the best product would be a combined event rather than a dual one.
So, if this materializes in the future, it will be a combined event.
That said, the current format works very well with a men’s competition. The intensity we see with this format is, in my opinion, among the best in tennis."
