Understanding why I lost in Paris is the reason I'm holding this trophy today," Sinner's speech after winning his first Wimbledon at the expense of Alcaraz
Jannik Sinner claimed his fourth Grand Slam title this Sunday, his first on the legendary grass of Wimbledon.
Facing Carlos Alcaraz, the world No. 1 took his revenge after a solid performance. Relieved and undoubtedly overjoyed by this first triumph, Sinner delivered a heartfelt speech on Centre Court:
"I’d like to start with Carlos. Another incredible tournament—thank you for being the player you are. It’s tough to play against you, but we truly have a great relationship on and off the court. To compete against each other, we need the best teams in the world, and that’s what we have. Keep working like this. You’ll lift this trophy many times, but so will I. And you already have two (laughs)!
This is so special. I see my parents, my brother, my whole team. It’s unbelievable. A special shout-out to my brother, by the way, because there’s no Formula 1 Grand Prix this weekend. [...]
It was emotionally tough. I had a very hard loss in Paris. No matter how you lose, you have to understand why you lost. That analysis is the reason I’m able to hold this trophy today. I have the right team around me. On the last game, I served really well. I’m happy I managed to keep my nerves in check, to stay solid. [...]
When I was young, I never imagined I could become a lifetime member of Wimbledon. Where I come from, all of this felt so far away. I’m living a dream. I really want to thank my team and everyone who came here for me today. It means so much. We put in so much energy to make me a better tennis player and a better person.
Finally, I’d like to thank the ball kids and everyone working for the tournament. It’s amazing to have you—you make our lives easier. And thank you to the crowd for all the support I’ve received over these two weeks.
