United Cup: Kazakhstan first to qualify for quarter-finals
On a new day of competition at the United Cup, the outcome was expected in Group C.
Kazakhstan and Greece, both winners over Spain, faced off in a decisive clash. The winner was guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals.
In the first singles, Stefanos Tsitsipas wanted to put his team on the road to qualification against Alexander Shevchenko.
But the Greek came up against his opponent, who won in two sets (6-4, 7-6).
This came as a surprise, as Tsitsipas was the favorite, especially as the world No. 11 had won his singles match against Spain in recent days.
As a result, Elena Rybakina could send her country into the quarter-finals in her first appearance at the tournament.
Against Maria Sakkari, the Kazakh player now coached by Goran Ivanisevic also won in two sets (6-4, 6-3).
With two wins from as many matches in this group, Kazakhstan has now qualified for the knockout phase.
The Asian nation becomes the first country to officially qualify for the quarter-finals of the United Cup 2025.
