US Open: A Wildcard for Venus Williams but Not for Stan Wawrinka?
Winner in 2016, Stan Wawrinka will not be going to Flushing Meadows this year. Ranked 146th in the ATP, the Swiss player was counting on help from the organization to participate in the US Open. Unfortunately, the invitation did not come for the former world number 3.
While this choice may seem logical given the player's age (40) and other contenders for this wildcard, it seems a bit less so when the tournament decided to include Venus Williams. This situation has raised questions among many tennis fans.
Indeed, while one has been battling for months in Challenger tournaments, the other has played only five matches in two years. Absent from the courts since Miami last year, the 45-year-old American reappeared in Washington this year thanks to an invitation.
A two-time winner of the American Grand Slam (2000 and 2001), the player, ranked 610th in the WTA, has not won a single match in New York since 2019 and her victory against Zheng Saisai (6-1, 6-0) in the first round. This year, she will face world number 12 Muchova.
