US Open: Parry Falls in Third Round, Osaka Joins Gauff in Round of 16
The final matchups for the Round of 16 are beginning to take shape in the women's draw at the US Open.
Diane Parry, the last remaining French player, was aiming for her first-ever second-week qualification at a Grand Slam. Facing Marta Kostyuk, ranked 28th in the world, the Nice native started on excellent footing by winning the first set and breaking early in the second. However, she then saw her opponent fight back to level the match.
Kostyuk saved a break point at 4-4 in the second set before breaking in the following game to even the match at one set apiece. It was a real blow to Parry, who eventually fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in 2 hours and 25 minutes. The Ukrainian will play her first Round of 16 match in New York against Karolina Muchova.
In other matches of the day, Naomi Osaka took on Daria Kasatkina. The Japanese player, a two-time champion at Flushing Meadows, initially dominated proceedings by taking the first set 6-0 before losing ground in the following set.
Despite Kasatkina's resurgence, Osaka ultimately prevailed 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the next round alongside Coco Gauff. This sets up one of the most anticipated matchups of the Round of 16, six years after their encounter on Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Osaka swept the young American 6-3, 6-0.
