US Open WTA: Gauff Scares Herself, Osaka Advances
Coco Gauff made her US Open debut in the night session on Arthur Ashe Court against Ajla Tomljanovic. Although she led 6-4, 4-2, the American was caught up by an Australian who believed in her chances and pushed the match into a third set.
The final set featured 4 breaks, but the world number 3 ultimately prevailed 6-4, 6-7, 7-5. She will face Donna Vekic in the next round.
In the New York evening, Naomi Osaka faced Greet Minnen, ranked 106th in the world. The Japanese player won without much trouble with a score of 6-3, 6-4, despite being down a break in the second set.
In the second round, Osaka will take on Hailey Baptiste.
