Vavassori on Sinner: "It's cruel to say, but if someone like Jannik is off the tour, the others are doing just fine"
Winner of the US Open and Indian Wells, Andrea Vavassori has achieved great results in doubles with his partner Sara Errani. The Italian also triumphed with Italy at the 2024 Davis Cup—a trophy he shared with three-time Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner.
In an interview with Fanpage, the Turin native reflected on his relationship with his compatriot:
"At the end of the day, the press would like us all to be super close friends. There’s a lot of respect between us, but I didn’t grow up with Jannik, and on a personal level, I can’t say we’re close friends.
I got to know him well during the Davis Cup, but I have stronger friendships with the people I grew up with. I have a lot of respect for him, and I think that’s one of the most important things."
Regarding the world No. 1’s suspension, the 29-year-old player spoke about the challenges of a sport like tennis:
"It’s very individualistic, and everyone thinks about themselves. It’s cruel to say, but if someone like Jannik is off the tour, the others are doing just fine—that’s just how it is.
Many have said things with that in mind. I don’t want to stir controversy; I just want to say I’m on his side and make him feel my support. I think he’s shown himself time and again to be a super positive person.
And he’s also made gestures toward us that made me very happy. I wanted to give something back to him and assure him of my support."
