Currently in Bucharest, Wawrinka defeated Shatov in a tight first-round match (6-4, 6-7, 7-6). At 40 years old, the Swiss player continues to deliver strong performances after his quarterfinal run in Naples.
Thanks to this result in a 250-level tournament, the Lausanne native has entered the top 5 oldest players to win an ATP match. This ranking, tracked since 1990, does not include Davis Cup matches.
Connors holds the top spot at 42 years and 9 months, followed by Karlovic at 42 years and 4 months, and Lopez at 41 years and 9 months.
The Swiss player (40 years old) narrowly surpasses his compatriot Federer (39 years and 11 months).
In the second round in Bucharest, Wawrinka will face Pedro Martinez, the tournament's second seed.
