Video - Collins' stormy end to the match with the Australian public
Danielle Collins will see out the third round at the Australian Open. Despite a tough match, the American, ranked 11th in the world, got the job done against qualifier Destanee Aiava (7-6, 4-6, 6-2).
The match was marked by a clash between Collins and the Australian public.
After the match point that saw the latter qualify, Collins celebrated by teasing the Kia Arena spectators with, among other things, an ironic kiss.
The handshake with Aiava was marked by a roar from the stadium towards Danielle Collins, who was booed as she conducted the on-court interview.
Her appearance before the Australian Open media had to be cut short, as even during her post-match speech, the spectators didn't spare her and continued to show their displeasure with the 31-year-old's attitude.
"During the match, I said to myself: 'If I'm going to be here, I might as well accept this big cheque'.
We love taking 5-star vacations and this check is going to contribute to that, so thanks for coming out to support us. Thank you all, I love you," Collins wryly told the crowd.
