Australian Open: Keys and Collins in the third round, a 100% American affair
We've (already) come to the end of the second-round program for this 2025 edition of the Australian Open.
One of the matches to watch in the round of 16 in Melbourne will be Madison Keys versus Danielle Collins. At least one American player will therefore see out the second week.
Madison Keys, who won the title in Adelaide last week, arrives with confidence. Nevertheless, the 14th-ranked WTA player had to work hard to overcome Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse (7-6, 2-6, 7-5 in 2h29).
After her opening victory over Ann Li, the 2017 US Open finalist will need to step up her game in this tournament.
Her next opponent, Danielle Collins, also didn't have an easy game against local Destanee Aiava, a qualifier.
Finalist in Melbourne in 2022, the number 10 seed disposed of her opponent of the day in three sets (7-6, 4-6, 6-2) in a match where tensions with the Australian public were apparent, notably after match point.
In head-to-head meetings, Keys leads Collins two wins to one. Their most recent meeting came in last year's Strasbourg final, when Keys came out on top (6-1, 6-2).
The latter will have the opportunity to reach the second week of the Australian Open for the first time since 2022, when she lost to Barty in the semi-finals.
