Video - Humbert's Bad Fall Forces Him to Retire Against Fearnley
Already dealing with a fifth metacarpal fracture in early April, Ugo Humbert had been competing in the clay-court season at less than full strength.
On Thursday, during the second round of Roland-Garros, the Frenchman’s luck took a turn for the worse. Leading 4-3 in the second set against Jacob Fearnley with a break advantage, Humbert collapsed to the ground after hitting a backhand.
Injured in his right leg, he initially stayed down before receiving a medical timeout.
Upon returning to the court, the world No. 21 lost his service game and ultimately retired, allowing Fearnley to advance to the third round of Roland-Garros for the first time in his career. He will now face his compatriot Cameron Norrie.
As for Humbert, he will surely hope to recover in time for the grass-court season.
