Gaël Monfils and Rafael Nadal faced off for the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 title in 2016.

On his side, the Frenchman was starting the 2016 season in a very satisfactory manner, notably with a quarterfinal at the Australian Open and a final in Rotterdam.

As for Rafa, he was seeking confidence after an early exit at the Australian Open and a disappointing clay court season in South America.

Having won the Monte-Carlo tournament 8 times, he was the heavy favorite. But Monfils didn't let himself be intimidated, as shown in this great rally concluded by a powerful forehand from the Frenchman.

Despite losing the first set 7-5, he managed to win the second set by the same score before completely collapsing in the final set, which Rafa won 6-0.
