Video - US Open 2021: Djokovic in Tears, the Calendar Grand Slam Slips Away
He was just one step away from the achievement. But facing Daniil Medvedev, Djokovic faltered. More than just a loss, it was an emotional release: the Serb, in tears, watched his dream collapse before the eyes of the entire world.
Having won the first three Grand Slams in 2021, Novak Djokovic arrived at the US Open with the intention of making history and becoming the second male player to achieve the calendar Grand Slam after Rod Laver in 1969.
An immense challenge, which the Serb took on all the way to the final in New York. But it was so close to the goal, just one victory away, that he missed out against Daniil Medvedev (6-4, 6-4, 6-4). The Russian then claimed his first (and currently only) Grand Slam, while Djokovic crumbled in tears on his bench with one game remaining.
Supported by the crowd, the Belgrade native let his emotions show, realizing the calendar Grand Slam was slipping away. An image that will remain in the history of tennis.
