In the round of 16 of the 2024 Shanghai Masters 1000, Carlos Alcaraz and Gaël Monfils met for the fourth time on the ATP Tour.

However, a few months earlier, the Frenchman had delivered an outstanding performance to defeat the Spaniard at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 (4-6, 7-6, 6-4). This time, a spot in the quarterfinals of the Chinese tournament was at stake.

Alcaraz came in strong, having just won the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing against Jannik Sinner and riding an eleven-match winning streak before this encounter.

As expected, both players, known for their showmanship, delighted with stunning points in this thrilling match. Alcaraz, more effective on the crucial points, ultimately secured the victory (6-4, 7-5 in 1 hour 26 minutes).

In a match where both players hit the same number of winners (22 each), the Spaniard finally got his revenge on Monfils, claiming his third win in four matches.

After victories against Dzumhur, Baez, and Humbert, the then 38-year-old player had met his match. However, it was Tomas Machac who ended Alcaraz's twelve-match winning streak in the next round, the quarterfinals (7-6, 7-5).
