Video - When Djokovic Charmed Tokyo in 2019: He Starts Speaking Japanese and Wins Over the Crowd!

In 2019 in Tokyo, Novak Djokovic surprised and delighted the audience by addressing them in Japanese after his final, showing a rare closeness with his fans and his considerate side.

Forced to withdraw from the US Open during the 2019 season, Djokovic returned to competition at the ATP Tokyo tournament, an event he had never participated in before.

His week in Japan turned out to be more than ideal as he did not drop a single set on his way to triumphing in the final against John Millman (6-3, 6-2).

During the trophy ceremony, the former world No. 1 delivered a few words of thanks in Japanese:

"Hello, how are you? Thank you for coming today." An effort that was greatly appreciated by the spectators who came to watch him play that day.
