Video - When Monfils Brought Federer to His Knees in the Davis Cup Final
Facing a diminished but combative Roger Federer, Gaël Monfils delivered a dazzling recital to revive the French team in the 2014 Davis Cup final.
In pursuit of one of the few titles missing from his illustrious career, Federer had arrived on the clay courts of Lille with a back injury, less than a week after withdrawing from the Masters final against Novak Djokovic.
In his only match of the weekend, Monfils outplayed the Maestro in straight sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-3), thrilling the Lille crowd and putting France level at one win apiece after the first day (see video below).
A memorable victory that, however, did not spark a turnaround for the French team, as they ultimately fell 3-1 by the end of the weekend.
