Vondrousova, first champion to be beaten in the 1st round since... Steffi Graf 30 years ago!

Vondrousova, first champion to be beaten in the 1st round since... Steffi Graf 30 years ago!

It's a rarity at Wimbledon for the title holder to be beaten in the first round. Before Marketa Vondrousova, last year's surprise winner who was beaten in the 1st round of this 2024 edition by Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, you had to go back 30 years to find such a scenario. In 1994, Steffi Graf, then world no. 1 and three-time title-holder on the grass of the All England Club, was beaten in the first round by American Lori McNeil.

McNeil went on to reach the semi-finals in 1994. Enough to give Bouzas Maneiro some good ideas?
