Vondrousova loses her title in the 1st round at Wimbledon!
Last year's surprise winner, Marketa Vondrousova, did just the opposite at this 2024 edition of Wimbledon. The Czech, world no. 6 at 25 but not at 100% physically, was eliminated in the first round on Tuesday.
She was beaten in just over an hour and two sets (6-4, 6-2) by Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, aged 21 and ranked 83rd in the world, who had never before won either a WTA Tour match on grass, or a match in the final draw of a Grand Slam tournament.
Vondrousova's drop in the WTA rankings is likely to be dizzying. At best, she will be ranked 15th in the world at the end of the tournament.
