Wawrinka, 40, continues to fight: "I want to go for another year"
The Swiss veteran showed great resources against Casper Ruud. At 40, he is already thinking about his return to Basel and hopes to continue the adventure for one more year.
Stan Wawrinka continues his journey on the professional tour, past the age of 40. The Vaudois, a three-time Grand Slam winner (Australian Open 2014, Roland-Garros 2015 and US Open 2016), won his first ATP match since July this week.
Then, against Casper Ruud in the second round, Wawrinka put up a good fight but ultimately lost in two sets (6-4, 7-6). A performance that convinces him to continue his career, with the goal of still being competitive in 2026.
This is, in any case, what he told journalists after his elimination (comments relayed by Blue Win):
"I hope to come back to Basel next year. But a year is very long, especially when you are 40. We'll see where I am in a year, even though I know the end is near.
We'll see how things evolve over the next twelve months, in terms of my fitness and my ranking.
I feel like going for another year, but everything really has to fall into place. I am happy (with this tournament), overall my level was good. It was a close match against Casper.
That's why I continue. As long as I feel competitive and I'm playing at a good level, I want to continue. I want to make the most of it, even if that doesn't include winning. I will fight to maintain a good level."
