Wawrinka Surrenders to Martinez in Bucharest
After winning his first-round match against Skatov on Tuesday in a grueling 3-hour and 17-minute battle, Stan Wawrinka had the benefit of a day's rest before returning to the court to face Pedro Martinez today.
Engaged in another marathon match, the Swiss player ultimately succumbed, falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 after 2 hours and 39 minutes. At 40 years old, Wawrinka will now take time to recover and arrive in top form for Monte-Carlo, where he has received a wild card from the tournament organizers.
Martinez, the tournament's No. 2 seed, will face Damir Dzumhur in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
