"We overcame all the difficulties with my team" - Sabalenka very proud after her US Open title
After losing the final to Coco Gauff last year, Aryna Sabalenka won the US Open 2024 this Saturday, beating Jessica Pegula in the final (7-5, 7-5). The world number 2 was interviewed by Mary Joe Fernandez (former world number 4) after the match (see video below).
Mary Joe Fernandez:
"Aryna, congratulations. You've come so close in the past.
You won two titles at the Australian Open, but what does it mean to win your first US Open?"
Aryna Sabalenka:
"Oh my God, I'm speechless right now, because as you've said so many times (applause)... as you've said so many times, I thought I was so close to winning a US Open title. I've always dreamed of it. And finally, I win this magnificent trophy.
It means a lot. It's been a tough couple of weeks. As for Jessica, I know how difficult the final was, but you showed incredible tennis.
And I'm more than sure that one day you'll have one. I mean, not just one, maybe more. But let's start with a Grand Slam. And congratulations on a great summer.
You're an extraordinary player. In that second set, honestly, I was praying.
I was literally praying for that win. And you were talking about leaving yourself a set (laughs)...
So yes, it means a lot. I'm literally speechless right now."
Mary Joe Fernandez:
"We saw some tears last year when you lost in the final. And now we're seeing a different kind of tear as you win this tournament. What are your emotions right now?"
Aryna Sabalenka:
"You know, all I'm thinking about, I'm remembering all the tough defeats I've suffered in the past here. It's going to sound easy for you to say, but never give up on your dream and keep trying, keep working hard. And if you work really hard and sacrifice everything for your dream, you'll get it one day.
So I'm very proud of myself. I never say this, but really, I'm very proud of myself. I'm proud of my team. Whatever happens, whatever situation we've faced this season and in the past, we've been able to pull through and win all these beautiful trophies."
Mary Joe Fernandez:
"You had a great hug with all of them. What does their support mean to you?"
Aryna Sabalenka:
"I mean, it's absolutely everything. Let's be honest, without them, I wouldn't be me and I wouldn't exist. And as I always say, without me, you wouldn't exist either. So, you're welcome (laughs).
No, no, I love you. And your support is everything. You're my family. And I don't know, I can't imagine my tennis life and my personal life without you. I really love you guys.
I really don't say it often, but I say it sometimes and I say it loud. But guys, I love you so much. Thank you so much. Thank you for being you."
Mary Joe Fernandez:
"And finally, Aryna, you asked the crowd to get involved during this match, playing another American woman. What were you thinking?"
Aryna Sabalenka:
"No, honestly, I mean, guys, thank you. I've heard a lot of support. You've encouraged me in the good times.
But of course, I expected you to cheer for Jessica. I mean, it wouldn't be normal for you to encourage me, you know (laughs). Anyway, thank you so much for your support throughout these two incredible weeks.
You're really extraordinary. And you make this place very special and very fun to play. So, thank you very much. Once again, you're incredible."
