WTA 500 Adelaide: Mirra Andreeva withdraws, Sakkari replaces her as lucky loser
With just one week to go before the start of the Australian Open, which will mark the beginning of the first Grand Slam of the season, the number of withdrawals from tournaments preparing for the Australian Major is mounting.
As the WTA 500 draw for Adelaide was released on Saturday, Mirra Andreeva withdrew from her first-round match against Linda Noskova.
The Russian reached the semi-finals in Brisbane this week, where she was beaten by Sabalenka.
Andreeva is replaced in the draw by Maria Sakkari. The Greek, ranked 32nd in the world, lost in the last round of qualifying to Peyton Stearns but was drafted in following Andreeva's withdrawal.
She will now face Noskova. A potential second-round clash with Jessica Pegula could be on the cards.
Among the players who made it through the qualifying rounds are Stearns (who will play Kostyuk), Belinda Bencic (who will face Kalinskaya from the start) and Leylah Fernandez, who could meet Emma Navarro in the second round.
