"We'll see it less and less," says Dimitrov on the one-handed backhand
Grigor Dimitrov spoke at a press conference this Saturday after his victory over Sebastian Ofner. Known for his highly aesthetic one-handed backhand, the Bulgarian was asked about this shot.
He stated: "The one-handed backhand is like life—it has its ups and downs. When you hit it right, it feels like hitting the jackpot. In the coming years, we'll see it less and less; that’s just how it is.
Tennis has evolved a lot. Everyone hits harder on both sides now. There’s no time to spare. I always say you have to make the most of it.
Everyone calls it a lost art, but it’s not entirely lost. If you can master a one-handed forehand, you can master a one-handed backhand. Of course, it’s more difficult.
Do you need to work more with your body? Yes, but on the other hand, it has its advantages. I think it’s up to the player to understand their own game, especially with a one-handed backhand."
Dimitrov is now the only remaining player in the Wimbledon men’s draw with a one-handed backhand, following August Holmgren’s elimination.
