Wilander Speaks on Djokovic Ahead of Monte-Carlo: "I Think He Needs Matches"
After his fortnight in Miami, Djokovic once again displayed high-quality tennis. Just days before Monte-Carlo, the first major tournament on clay, many are questioning the Serb's ability to maintain his level of play at nearly 38 years old.
In an interview with Eurosport, former champion Wilander shared his thoughts on the Serb's participation in the principality. According to him, the 24-time Grand Slam winner has every reason to compete, despite his disappointing results in recent years:
"I think he should play in Monte-Carlo. I don’t think the surface matters when you’re Novak Djokovic. He has the ability to play just as well on clay as on hard courts.
Monte-Carlo isn’t a tournament where he’s achieved great results, but it’s a tournament where you can win a few matches.
I think at his age, going two, three, or four weeks without playing is not a good thing. I think he needs matches."
In 2024, the world No. 5 lost in the semifinals to Ruud in three sets (6-4, 1-6, 6-4).
