Wimbledon 2025: A Grand Slam Tournament Already Making History for the Seeds
This start to the Wimbledon tournament has been full of surprises. As the second round in both singles draws concluded this Thursday, many seeded players have already exited the competition prematurely.
Out of the 64 seeded players (men and women combined) in London, only 28 have managed to win their first two matches. As reported by Wimbledon’s X account (formerly Twitter), never since the introduction of 32 seeds in Grand Slams 24 years ago have so few seeded players advanced to the round of 16.
In the women’s draw, five players currently ranked in the top 10 have been eliminated: Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini (the reigning finalist), Zheng Qinwen, and Paula Badosa are all out of the tournament. Before the start of the third round, more than half of the seeded players have been knocked out (17 out of 32).
On the men’s side, 13 seeded players failed to clear the first-round hurdle, and only 13 remain in contention at this stage, even before the start of the second week.
It’s a true massacre, from which the two defending champions are still surviving—for now. Barbora Krejcikova and Carlos Alcaraz, both through to the third round, remain in the running to retain their crowns by the end of the fortnight.
