WTA 1000 Beijing: Gauff Ends Lys' Run and Reaches Semifinals

Coco Gauff confirmed her status at the WTA 1000 Beijing by defeating Eva Lys in the quarterfinals.
The first quarterfinal of the WTA 1000 Beijing this Thursday pitted Coco Gauff against Eva Lys. The world number 3 and defending champion was the favorite against the German, who qualified for the quarterfinals in this tournament category for the first time in her career after victories over Zhang Ruien (6-1, 6-0), Iva Jovic (6-3, 4-6, 7-5), Elena Rybakina (6-3, 1-6, 6-4), and McCartney Kessler (4-6, 6-1, 6-2).
This was the first meeting between these two players. Confident after her wins against Kamilla Rakhimova (6-4, 6-0), Leylah Fernandez (6-4, 4-6, 7-5), and Belinda Bencic (4-6, 7-6, 6-2), this season's Roland Garros winner hoped to continue her good momentum after her elimination in the round of 16 at the US Open by Naomi Osaka.
On the court, Gauff demonstrated her superiority despite several tight games. Lys did not disappoint, but in the end, Gauff, comfortable on the Beijing courts, knew how to tighten the game at the right moment to win in two sets without expending too much energy along the way (6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour and 27 minutes).
The American secures her 10th consecutive victory in the Chinese capital and qualifies for the semifinals for the third consecutive season. For a spot in the final, she will face Amanda Anisimova or Jasmine Paolini, who will play each other at 12:00 (French time).
