WTA 1000 Wuhan: Gracheva Upsets Jovic and Enters Main Draw
Facing one of the rising stars of world tennis, Varvara Gracheva secured her ticket to the WTA 1000 Wuhan.
As the only French player to qualify for the second round of the WTA 1000 Wuhan qualifiers, Varvara Gracheva was just one win away from the main draw. After her victory against Ajla Tomljanovic (5-7, 5-2 ret.) the previous day, the world No. 79 confirmed her form against Iva Jovic (3-6, 6-4, 6-2).
The world No. 37, who won her first title on the main tour at the WTA 500 Guadalajara in mid-September, had hoped to qualify for the main draw but stumbled against the resilience of the French player.
Coming off a streak of three consecutive losses before arriving in Wuhan, the 25-year-old Gracheva will learn her first-round opponent in the coming hours.
Also qualifying were Yulia Putintseva (who had defeated Diane Parry yesterday 6-1, 6-0), Lucia Bronzetti, Antonia Ruzic, Katerina Siniakova, Anastasia Zakharova, and Polina Kudermetova. The final qualifier will be either Moyuka Uchijima or Wang Xiyu.
