Alcaraz Wins Monte-Carlo for the First Time Against a Hampered Musetti
Carlos Alcaraz claimed his 6th Masters 1000 title this Sunday and his first Monte-Carlo victory by defeating Lorenzo Musetti.
The match had started poorly for the Spaniard after he lost the first set 6-3.
Fortunately for him—and unfortunately for his opponent—Musetti suffered a right thigh injury and had to receive medical treatment.
This injury prevented him from competing at his best, leading to a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 defeat in a match heavily influenced by the Italian’s physical condition.
In his post-match on-court interview, Alcaraz expressed his satisfaction and had a few words for his opponent: "This isn’t the way I would’ve wanted to win. It’s been tough for Lorenzo this week—he’s had some difficult matches.
This is one of the best results of his career here, and I hope his injury isn’t serious and that he’ll be back at 100% very soon.
I’m really happy to win here for the first time. It’s been a tough week for me, and honestly, a difficult month overall.
But hard work pays off, and this is a great feeling for me.
I’ve been struggling on court lately—it’s been hard to focus on the things that matter most to me."
Both finalists are expected to compete in next week’s Barcelona tournament, though Musetti’s participation on Spanish clay now seems highly uncertain.
