Arthur Fils becomes French number 1 at 20 years old, following in the footsteps of Noah, Gasquet, and Monfils.
Monday, March 17, 2025, Arthur Fils became one of the youngest French players to reach the position of French number 1. Thanks to his quarter-final at the Indian Wells Masters 1000, he is ranked 17th in the ATP.
According to the newspaper L’Équipe, Fils becomes the fourth youngest Frenchman to hold this position, behind Noah (18 years and 2 months, on August 14, 1978), Gasquet (19 years and 2 days, on June 20, 2005), and Gaël Monfils (19 years and 9 months, on June 12, 2006).
The native of Bondoufle (Essonne, France) reaches the top French spot, 52 years after Patrick Proisy (23rd on August 23, 1973). This was the date when the first ATP ranking was revealed.
Yannick Noah remains to this day the French player who held this position the longest (from 1978 to 1990).
