Arthur Fils in trouble again
Arthur Fils seemed to have got his season back on track by winning the ATP 500 Hamburg, the biggest title of his career, on July 21. But things haven't quite gone according to plan since then. The 20-year-old Frenchman, ranked 24th in the world, was beaten in the first round of the Paris Olympics by Matteo Arnaldi (6-4, 7-6) and then in the first round of the Montreal Masters 1000 by Ugo Humbert (6-2, 6-2).
He made it through the first round in Cincinnati on Tuesday, defeating the modest American Brandon Holt, a qualifier ranked 227th in the world. But he stumbled in the second round on Thursday, losing to Brandon Nakashima in just under two hours and two sets (7-5, 7-6).
As the Frenchman himself said a few weeks ago, he'll now have to show himself capable of playing his best tennis with greater consistency if he's to reach a new milestone in his rise to the top.
